Biomedical Innovation Thrives in Ohio

With more than 4,000 bioscience organizations located in 4,800 facilities statewide, Ohio's bioscience industry continues to build upon the state's strong history of innovation (BioOhio, 2021, Stats & Facts. https://www.bioohio.com/ohio/). The state boasts six core fields of bioscience: agricultural biotechnology, medical and testing laboratories, medical devices and equipment, medical product distribution, pharmaceuticals and therapeutics, and research and development. Organizations continue to break barriers, working to cure debilitating diseases, formulate cleaner biofuels, reduce consumer healthcare costs, improve the quality and yield of crops, and so much more.
The growth in Ohio includes expanded operations and the establishment of new companies choosing to reside in Ohio. In 2019 alone, 40 projects were announced that projected capital investments of $757 million. In fact, 2019 saw Ohio bioscience companies bring in more than $2 billion in funding from venture capital, federal research grants, state initiatives, and other sources.

Download Stats & Facts
More than 81,000 individuals are employed at bioscience firms across Ohio, from large, well-known organizations to younger, growing start ups. That's more than 81,000 opportunities for career establishment and advancement. With the state's continued growth of the industry, that number of opportunities is sure to grow as well — along with the annual payroll of $6.8 billion. That economic impact is visible throughout the state, with bioscience-related companies found in 83 of the 88 Ohio counties.
Ohio's bioscience education continues to thrive, too, fostering young minds with an interest in the field. 2018 saw nearly 12,000 bioscience-related degrees and certificates awarded to students in Ohio — an increase of 77% since 2006.
